We have just updated our guide to referencing and bibliographies. This guide is available in both printed form in the CLIC and in electronic form, from the guides section of the CLIC website. In this guide I have now added a section explaining how you can easily insert citations (in various styles) into your Word 2007 document and then, with a click of a button, create a bibliography listing all the citations which you have inserted.

This guide is just a small excerpt from the online course, Research & Study Skills, which I have written and updated for Office 2007, and which is freely available via Blackboard to all staff and students.

Wireless Internet access now available at the CLIC

Join Glasgow Libraries at the CLIC

We now stock Glasgow Libraries membership forms and cards. This means that students and staff at Langside College, as people who either live or work in Glasgow, can now join Glasgow Libraries without the hassle of actually going to a public library! Simply fill in the membership form, which is now available from the College Learning Information Centre (no proof of address is required), and hand it in at our Issue Desk. We will then immediately issue you with your public library membership card which you can then use to access the wide range of resources and services provided by Glasgow Libraries, which complement those provided by us, including:
access to all public libraries in Glasgow including the Mitchell Library;
24 hour online library with a good selection of online resources particularly on business, news & current affairs;

For several years now we have subscribed to the print copies of several of the Philip Allan Update magazines which are aimed at supporting A-Level students in a wide range of subjects. Now all the issues in the current volumes of these magazines are available online at the following website:

Learn to use Microsoft Word 2007 CD-ROM

The CLIC has recently added this CD-ROM to our stock. It gives a good introduction to using Microsoft Word 2007 and is easy to use. The CD-ROM is available from the Issue Desk and runs directly form the CD-ROM and so can be used on any computer in the CLIC.

Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing CD-ROM

New booking system - MyPC

Booking a computer @ the CLIC? It’s as easy as 1 2 3 with MyPC our new computer booking system.

1 Walk up booking
For an instant booking of up to 2 hours simply log on to an available computer using your college network log in details. If you do not have a network account then you can still book onto a computer, using a guest account, with staff at the Issue Desk.

2 Booking with CLIC staff
If you want to book a computer in advance, or you do not have a college network account, then you can make a booking with library staff at the Issue Desk.

3 Booking online
You can also log into the MyPC booking system , using your college network log-in, to make bookings for yourself.

Rules/Limits
Whatever booking method is used the following rules/limits apply:

max. of 2 hours per booking (30 minute extension is possible);
max. of 6 bookings (totalling no more than 5 hours) per day;
max. of 6 advance bookings allowed up to one week in advance;
3 warnings (at 10, 5 & 3 minutes to go) to save any open documents PLEASE NOTE: YOUR WORK WILL BE LOST IF YOU DO NOT DO SO;
advance bookings are held for 10 minutes before being cancelled;
use of the computers are strictly limited to the CLIC’s opening hours;
improper use or behaviour can lead to a ban from accessing any of the computers in the CLIC.

Janet Taylor - new library assistant

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Janet Taylor as a part-time library assistant at the CLIC. Janet will cover our evening and Saturday opening hours. Her appointment means that we are now able to return to our normal opening hours, including Saturdays, which are:

Wednesday: 08.30 - 21.00

Thursday: 08.30 - 17.00

Opening hours

The CLIC is returning to normal opening hours as of the week beginning Monday, 19 January 2009. However we will not be able to open on Saturdays until the appointment of a new library assistant which we hope to do later this month. So until further notice our opening hours are as follows:

New readers for ESOL students

We now have a large number of new readers available to ESOL students. The good news is that they all have accompanying audio CDs to improve your listening skills. ESOL readers are arranged into five categories according to level of difficulty as follows:

Grey - Starter, Elementary or Pre-intermediate
Red - Elementary, Pre-intermediate or Intermediate
Yellow - Pre-intermediate, Intermediate or Upper-intermediate
Blue - Intermediate, Upper-intermediate or Advanced
Green - Upper-intermediate or Advanced

Federated Access Management Update

We are pleased to announce that remote access (i.e. outside of the College) to several of our online resources is now available through the UK Federation method of authentication.

This means that any of our online resources, listed in the Online Resources section of the College website, as being able to be accessed "via UK Federation log in" can now be accessed outside of the College as follows:
Step 1 Go to web address of the resource you wish to access
Step 2 Click on link or button to log in via UK Federation or via your home organisation or similar
Step 3 Select Langside College from the list of eligible institutions
Step 4 Click OK in the "Choose a certificate" box
Step 5 Log in using your Langside College network log in
Step 6 You should now be given access to the resource

Please note that when you are using a computer within the College network you normally are automatically logged into our online resources.

Dawsonera ebooks free trial

The CLIC has started a 30 day free trial (until Monday 2/2/09) of the Dawsonera ebooks collection. Dawsonera is a searchable web-based collection of over 80,000 ebooks which can be previewed online and once purchased can be viewed online, downloaded to a PC, laptop or USB flash drive and printed (up to 5% of ebook can be printed in line with copyright rules). Readers can even request for an ebook to be "rented" for a short period of time if we have not already purchased it.

The CLIC can order ebooks in the same way as printed books for just over the cost of the hardback version of the book and, again like a printed book, we will own this book outright although access to it is resticted on an annual basis. So ebooks may be a very economic solution to the age-old problem for librarians of everyone wanting the same book at the same time. Also ebooks can't be overdue, lost, damaged or stolen!

The free trial gives us access to 50 ebooks without charge to allow you to see how the system operates and to get a feeling of what an ebook is. You are also able to preview any of the other ebooks in the collection (currently around 82,000) for up to 5 minutes.

New periodical - ELT Journal

We have taken out a new subscription to the ELT Journal starting with the January 2009 (Volume 63 Number 1) issue. This is a quarterly journal (published in January, April, July and October each year) for teachers of English to speakers of other languages.

The first issue is now available from the periodicals section of the CLIC but remember that the current issue of periodicals is for reference only while back issues can be borrowed for up to a week at a time.
